Halloween can be a fun but stressful time for dogs, with unfamiliar sights, sounds, and visitors. Here are some tips to ensure your dog stays safe and comfortable during Halloween:

• Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat if the doorbell, costumes, or commotion overwhelms them. This could be a room with their favourite bed, toys, and some calming music.
• Keep Candy Out of Reach: Halloween candy, especially chocolate, can be toxic to dogs. Make sure all candy is kept out of reach, and inform children not to share their treats with the family dog.
• Ensure Proper ID: With the door opening frequently, there’s a chance your dog could slip out. Make sure they have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped just in case.
• Introduce Costumes Slowly: If you want to dress up your dog, ensure the costume is comfortable and doesn’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing. Introduce the costume gradually to make sure they’re comfortable with it.
• Use a Leash if Outside: If you’re taking your dog trick-or-treating or they’re outside during Halloween, always keep them on a leash. The unusual sights and sounds could make even well-behaved dogs anxious and prone to running away.
• Watch for Decorations: Some Halloween decorations, like candles, string lights, or small objects, can be hazardous to dogs. Keep decorations out of reach and make sure they aren’t tempting or dangerous to curious pups.
• Keep Calm: If your dog is anxious about the increased activity or the noise from trick-or-treaters, try calming sprays, pheromone diffusers, or anxiety wraps. You can also play calming music to soothe them.
• Limit Interaction with Strangers: Not all dogs are comfortable with strangers, especially if those strangers are in costumes. Avoid forcing your dog to interact with visitors if they seem scared or uncomfortable.
